Beyond finding you a home, SDA helps with the benefits and bills that decide whether a home stays affordable. The most common requests are set out below — what each one covers, and how to ask for it.

Extra Benefits

Help getting the benefits you may already qualify for

Many people are owed help they have never asked for. We look at what you may qualify for and help you start the paperwork.

What we help with

  • Medicare plan reviews
  • Food assistance and utility help
  • Help paying for prescriptions
  • Free or low-cost phone and internet programs
  • Other benefits that free up money for rent

How to ask for it

Register first, then tell us which benefits you want help with. Before any Medicare or benefits discussion, we arrange a short Scope of Appointment meeting with you — it costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Community Food Assistance & Portal Support

Free, independent guidance to food resources and benefit portals

We offer free, independent guidance to help seniors and families locate local food resources, understand benefit options, and navigate online application portals.

What we help with

  • Portal Guidance — step-by-step help with accessing state benefit systems
  • Local Resources — referrals to local food pantries, senior meal networks, and emergency food programs

How to ask for it

Register first, then tell us you need food assistance guidance. We walk you through the portal at your own pace, or you can file an official SNAP application yourself at no cost through Florida's MyACCESS portal.

SDA Elderly Care Referral Service Inc. is a private, independent referral entity. We are not an official government agency, nor are we affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). We do not charge fees for food assistance guidance. Official SNAP applications can be filed directly at no cost through Florida's MyACCESS portal.

Rental Assistance

Help paying rent before you move in, or rent you are behind on

There are two kinds of rent help, and we work both: covering the cost of moving somewhere new, and catching up on rent you already owe.

What we help with

  • First month's rent and a deposit
  • Rent you are behind on
  • Filling out the application and gathering the paperwork
  • Referrals to county assistance programs near you

How to ask for it

Register first. Already registered? Sign in to the tenant portal and send your rental assistance application — you can follow it from received to approved.

Assisted Living (ALF)

Referrals to licensed assisted living homes with daily support

Assisted living homes provide housing together with help for daily needs — meals, medication reminders and personal care. These are independent communities we refer you to: we explain what assisted living covers, and help you find and visit homes in your area.

What we help with

  • Referrals to assisted living facilities in your county
  • Understanding what assisted living covers and what it costs
  • Help gathering the paperwork for facility applications
  • Arranging visits and tours

How to ask for it

Register first, then tell us you would like assisted living referrals. We will call you back to talk through the communities in your area.

Please note

SDA does not own or operate assisted living or independent living communities. They are separate communities we refer you to, and we help with visits, applications and waiting lists.

Independent Living (ILF)

Referrals to senior and independent living communities

Independent living communities are for people who can live on their own but want a community built around them — more freedom, lighter services, and often lower costs than assisted living. These are independent communities we refer you to, not SDA housing.

What we help with

  • Referrals to independent living and senior communities near you
  • Comparing rent, services and amenities
  • Help with applications and waiting lists
  • Arranging visits and tours

How to ask for it

Register first, then tell us you would like independent living referrals. We will go over the communities that fit your budget and needs.

Please note

SDA does not own or operate assisted living or independent living communities. They are separate communities we refer you to, and we help with visits, applications and waiting lists.

We help you find the right help and fill out the paperwork. The assistance program — not SDA — makes the final decision on approval.
